It's safe to say that if you're already browsing through homify that you have an inkling or even a passion for interior design. At the very least, you care about your home, your environment and your lifestyle – all the things homify cares about as well!

There are plenty of ways to prove to guests, friends and family that you have a passion for interior design, and we have seven tips and tricks that you can start with to make a difference in your home…

Make a statement at the entrance

The entrance to your home is the ultimate first impression, and one in which you should make a statement. This statement should speak volumes about your lifestyle, attitude and tastes.  Whether that be a fantastic modern light fixture, an abstract, large-scale artwork or simply the architecture and interior architecture of the space left raw and exposed, look for statement pieces and try to find one or two items that can represent you.

Looking to make more of a fun and carefree first impression? Why not use chalkboard paint in your entrance to write messages and make your own art for guests?

Use pastel colours to cool environments

Pastel blues, purples and greens have a tendency to cool down environments as you can see in this great kitchen/dining room example. It's smart to use pastels for feature walls, wallpaper, furnishings and accessories – which is exactly what you see pictured here!

Don't shy away from using pastels and different textures to liven up your bedroom as well. This bedroom has great cool pastels and textures!

Use textiles to give consistency and character

In order to give your home character, you will need to pay attention to the details. This will include, pillows, throws, blankets and especially a great rug.

Do some research and try to find out the history and story behind certain objects because that is where the true character lays in all decor – the stories and meanings.

Use an entire wall for shelves

We love bookshelves and you should too! Bookshelves are a way to incorporate books, art, decor, accessories and great lighting design. You can see all of these elements included in the wonderful mahogany bookshelf pictured here.

Prioritise good lighting

Similar to the art of photography, a tasteful home is more about lighting than anything else.  It doesn't matter how great your furnishings, accessories and architecture are if you have inappropriate lighting.

Always make natural light your number one priority, and whenever artificial light is needed try to use strategic placement and eco-friendly, sustainable options to keep it stylish, cheap, and environmentally sound.

Make the most of small spaces

Even in large homes, small spaces will exist – attic space, corner space and alcoves like this show that you can create a space for everything. Whether it's a custom-made bookshelf or a full-blown storage system, use your space wisely!

Embrace simplicity
