Back gardens are a coveted possession for those that like to entertain and enjoy outdoor space with family. While living in rural or country areas can give you all the privacy you need, if you find yourself in a cramped city neighborhood where neighbors seem to be surrounding you at every angle,  it can be hard to escape the crowds.

If you seek both privacy and tranquility in your backyard space, there are design techniques, both extensive and simple, that can give you and your family a beautiful and private space.  Of course, most homeowners think of fencing, or large shrubs and trees, as a way to create a more sheltered yard, but why not try new techniques like vertical gardening or horizontal wooden fencing?  Below we will show you seven backyards that have created a sense of privacy, while maintaining the design integrity of the home – we hope you feel inspired as summer approaches!

Enclosed patio

If your living room and patio are connected via sliding doors or large-scale windows, then you're lucky.  This design technique has already created some privacy for you – however, what are you supposed to do with the remaining backyard?  If you have neighbours directly behind you, this can be a cause for concern.

The best way to create a sense of privacy and tranquility is to provide an overhang to grow and drape various vines from in order to reduce from the sides and above. Remember, a mixture of natural materials is a great way to create a dynamic environment – for example, grass, shrubs, rocks, natural stone and flowers have all been used in this example.

Sunroom + pathway

This home is fantastically modern and the use of the raw materials makes it an interesting design concept.  The use of floor-to-ceiling glass allows the natural light to infiltrate the home and gives full view to the greenery and wonderful natural stone walkway.

If you choose to have this much exposure in your patio or sunroom, make sure to install spotlights, as seen here, as both a design feature and to keep you aware of who is outside your home. The tranquility provided by the seamless connection with nature in designs like this is a great inspiration, especially for modern and minimalist homes.

Wooden wonderland

Fencing doesn't have to be boring, high-maintenance or an eye-sore. As a tradition, we are so stuck on fencing with vertical planks and board that we forget the amazing and modern look a horizontal design can give! A horizontal design can be more private when the wooden beams are stacked closely together. If you want a more spaced-out look, take a peek at this example!

This small, encapsulated backyard has everything you need, from a minimal, clean look with hidden storage, to a wonderful area for dining and plenty of fresh greenery! Also, if you choose horizontal fencing, then why not consider a shelving system that fits right in and allows you to do some fun vertical gardening?

Willing to build actual walls? This indoor patio heaven would be a great inspiration!

Interior patio

At first glance, this patio seems pretty typical.  It's a great size and quite rustic with the rough stone flooring, Mediterranean colour scheme, cacti and exposed roof beams. However, if you take a second to envision what this space could be, the possibilities are endless.

Throw down an exterior rug or carpet, add a beautiful all-white seating arrangement with a table and use the corner for either a mini-outdoor kitchen or even more tropical greenery.  The light fixtures can certainly stay as they play into the rustic environment and for more cover from the sun, why not add some nice vines or hanging plants?

Vertical landscaping

The newest and best trend in gardening is vertical landscaping.  At first this might seem like an impossibly hard project with lots to figure out, like how to plant and where the proper drainage goes. Not to worry! There are plenty of step-by-step guides that will help you in creating your very own interior landscape wonderland.  Also, if you stick with large and cheap greenery that spreads easily, the cost of plants will be cheaper than you think.

This is a great technique because it can be applied indoors or outdoors and once installation is complete, the upkeep and maintenance are perfect for the busiest of people.

Creative balconies

It's not realistic to expect everyone to have a large and open backyard to turn into a tranquil and private family area. If you find yourself in the city and a balcony is all you have to work with, that's okay! It's hard to change the physical structure of your apartment, so installing floor-to-ceiling windows might be impossible.

Why not create a tranquil and peaceful rock garden or rock-scape on your balcony? It's a unique and fun idea that won't break the bank or require much effort. The balcony in this example is of an average size, and with the inclusion of white rocks and some greenery, there is now both privacy and tranquility.

Plenty of greenery and history

Historic homes are wonderful and they tend to take you in before you even step foot inside. For older colonial, or even villa style homes, consider large amounts of greenery and vines to add to the historic integrity. For the entrance ways to both the front and backyard, flank the doorways with large-scale fern, rose bushes or wild flowers and don't overgroom or trim them, just let them grow for an über-romantic look, year round.

With historic homes, tranquility can be gained simply by allowing the space to return to its natural state. Impressive, right? If you're looking for more ideas on how to add some peace and tranquility to your home by means of gardening or planting, learn how to create your own holistic garden!
