Moving is an inevitable venture that we will have to make at least once or twice in our lifetime.  It's grueling, stressful and at the same time fulfilling.  The hardest part tends to be the ambiguous period of uncertainty that occurs after the lease is signed and the boxes are unloaded.  Somehow, a space doesn't quite feel like home right away and this can cause a deceleration on our lives in multiple ways.

However, there are ways to combat this phase and we have plenty of options for you.  The most important thing is to take one area of your home, whether it's a desk, a table, a wall or a piece of furniture, and turn it into a space that represents everything about you. For example, sit your favourite table where you want it, add a unique lamp, a family portrait or special piece of art work and a fresh bouquet of flowers – over time you will find that this one area will infiltrate the rest of your apartment and make the feeling of ’home’ come right back to you.  Check out some of our other suggestions below!

Decorate with your essence

Your essence is that unspoken, implicit feeling you give to both yourself and those around you. Perhaps a particular artwork represents your essence, or fresh bouquets of flowers – maybe it's even a simple wall colour that metaphorically speaks for your particular stance in life.

Let the essence you hold become the design and interior decorating inspiration for your new apartment and in no time it will begin to feel like yours. We suggest that you start with a particular colour palette – and some unique, special furnishings as the larger inspiration for the smaller items that are to come as you complete your move and your interior concept.

Don't be afraid to decorate

When you first move into a new place you will find yourself standing in the wide open and stark rooms, wondering if you should do what you did in your last place, or try a whole new theme.  Either way, don't be afraid to simply start decorating. Start with an appropriate colour scheme that matches your art and furnishings and hold onto those pieces which hold some sentimental value.

The shape, size and location of the apartment will bring enough new beginnings to your life, so your interior decor and style should be timeless, unyielding and consistent.

Your style should follow you wherever you go – from the clothes you wear to the food you eat and the venues you frequent.  Your style, aesthetic and design choice should clearly show in the place you call home, and this will, surprisingly, come more naturally to you than you think!

If you're carrying over a lot of items and decor from your old place, use them, but in a different context. Rearrange pictures, reupholster furnishings that are wearing old on you and choose a colour palette and lighting fixtures that are exemplary of everything you are.

Consider quirky and unique pieces like this to really make a grand statement!
