We don’t need to be told twice about the benefits (in terms of visual beauty and health) that come with peppering one’s home with plants and flowers. And the indoor-plant concept becomes even more enticing once one realises just how easy it is to grow useful plants and herbs indoors to kick that cooking (and even natural-medicine batch) up a notch.

But don’t stress if you weren’t blessed by the garden gods, don’t have the means to hire a professional Gardener or Landscape Architect, or have very limited space to work with. These ways have proven to be the easiest (and most fun) to add some lush and charming greenery to your interiors.

1. Look to the windows

Many indoor plants require sunlight to grow, which makes placing them near windows a no brainer. But have you ever thought of enhancing this simple idea by DIYing a ledge for that window to set up your little potted pretties? Or hanging an over-the-window plant shelf somewhere in your home, like the living room or study? Instead of going the usual route and hanging up a curtain somewhere, create a plant shelfie by grouping together various plants to hang atop your window.

2. Craft yourself a little kitchen garden

We love the idea of a little indoor herb garden growing charmingly on a sunny kitchen windowsill. Sadly, this is not an option for all spaces. But you can still introduce some fresh greens into your cooking zone by hanging small planters on your kitchen cabinets.

Alternatively, should you have adequate countertop space, you can collect and scatter teeny tiny succulents in complementary pots all over the heart of your home.

3. How about bookshelves and picture ledges?

Don’t let those high shelves in your living room, bedroom, or anywhere else go to waste simply because they are “tricky to reach”. Add some trailing plants that cascade downwards to the floor like a lush, natural drape – very popular and low maintenance.

If there’s potential to add something to the wall, might we suggest picture ledges? Along with being cheaper than traditional shelving, picture ledges are ideal for displaying indoor plants, as the small lip on the edge can keep them from falling off.

4. Your own little plant corner

Got an empty or under-styled corner somewhere just dying for some attention? Consider filling it with plants of different shapes and sizes. And never forget that the pot you pick for your plant has major potential.

Will you select pots in calm, neutral tones? Will they be abundantly colourful to make your little corner come to life? How about grouping similar plants in similar-looking pots for some consistency? So many options to consider…

homify hint: Unleash your creative side. Instead of usual pots bought from the nursery, consider using these regular household items to put a unique twist on your interior style:

• (oversized) tea cups

• tin cans

• fishbowl

• glass jars

• paint cans

• old watering can

• baskets

• burlap sack

• coffee / tea cans.

5. What are the best indoor plants in the UK?

Last but certainly not least, if you’re going to style up your interiors with plants and flowers, you need to know which ones are considered the best in terms of detoxifying air. Some suggestions from our side include the following:

• Aloe Vera

• Barberton Daisy

• Broad Lady Palm

• Chrysanthemum

• English Ivy

• Snake Plant or Mother-In-Law's Tongue

• Spider Plant

• Weeping Fig.
