Each building withholds the memories of thousands of human interactions through its long lifetime. When it has been uninhabited and newcomers arrive, they can often remark that they feel the sensations of the walls whirring with mystery and memories of what’s transpired there.

That is why the successful renovation of an old structure can be so delightful and fascinating. The ability of the designers to take the best elements of the old building and transpose a blank slate to welcome the act of making new memories isn’t exactly an easy task. Nor is restoring old buildings in a more technical sense. It takes a truly talented team of professionals to create a new beginning out of something that seems to be long past its prime.

Today on homify360 we will be exploring one such building. Renovated by Rubio· Bilbao Arquitectos, this old barn in Selorio, Portugal is both rustic and modern in style, seamlessly blending the old and the new into a sight to behold.

Rustic meets modern

From the building’s exterior we can begin to see the way that the renovation took shape. The bulk of the old barn structure remains intact and the roof was refurbished to take on much of the same character of the original.

There are several details about the façade, however, that indicate a modern twist. The windows, their black frames, and the dark wooden planks on the second story all speak to a more industrial stylistic persuasion. The combination of rustic and industry pervades throughout the home’s interior. Let’s have a look inside.

Cosy hallway

Inside we can see the true liveability of this rustic abode. There are lots of details to indicate that it’s a welcoming home to its new owners. In particular, the presence of the blue coat hooks and wooden show rack are the details of true domestic functionality. The industrial style parquetry grounds the home in more modern times while the exposed wooden beams and stonewalls are reminiscent of its past. The resulting look is cosy and inviting.

A living room fit for a family

The entry foyer opens up into this lovely living room. We see the same industrial parquet flooring combined with distinctly rustic walls and ceilings in this room as well.

The presence of simple furnishings works well in keeping the space from looking too busy. The sofa and chairs are made from durable materials to accommodate a family with kids and pets while also creating an overall ambience of cosiness.

Industrial country kitchen

To maximise space effectively, the design team used a modular set up in the kitchen. The omission of handles on the cupboards also helps to keep things looking more spacious and updated.

The kitchen fronts are modern in style, providing a refreshing textural break-up when set against the rustic stonewall backdrop. Along the same vein, the laminate wooden pattern is quite similar to the industrial style parquetry below. The design team successfully mesh the aesthetics of the new and the old.

Simple sitting room

We will finish out tour with this elongated sitting room. The shape of the space draws the eye to the open door that leads to the exterior, revealing a lush surrounding rural landscape. A timber bookshelf dominates one wall and matches the exposed beams stretching across the width of the ceiling above. The sofa is a suitable spot for curling up with a favourite book, watching television, or for guests to stay when they visit the family.
