Often, when one thinks of incredible ways to change their home they typically think of the obvious items – furniture, accessories, wall art and graphic prints.  However, we want you to consider another option to make the preexisting structures and items in your home stand out as they are – lighting!

Lighting doesn't have to be expensive, or necessarily need the professionals for installation.  There are plenty of handmade, alternative, or commercial-standard lighting systems that are easy to install and affordable!  Below, we will discuss with you, everything necessary, to create the perfect environment by just using appropriate lighting – from the correct placement, to the right size and right styles. It's also important to keep watch of trending styles and the future of lighting when thinking about changing it up in your home – we can help with that too!

The art of placement

Placing lights and lighting fixtures correctly in your home can be just as hard as figuring out how to place furniture or art work!  However, there are some key elements to consider in this process that can make it a lot easier.

Are there any focal points in your home? Like in this example, the fabulous staircase and wall-length candle fireplace are the two highlights.  The homeowner has strategically placed accent lights to highlight the stairway and a minimalist set of row lights hidden in black to showcase the mantle.

For starters, think about the corners of your room, even if your room is small, this will create the illusion of space – and if you have any design features, show those off as well.  For design purposes, use multiple types of light, as seen here.  Flip through magazines, check out your options and think about affordable ways you can change your scene!

Light sources

There are two types of light sources available in your home at any given time: natural light and artificial light.  We think a combination of both is best, and a combination of both is what most homeowners have to work with.  When available, natural light is better and of course, more energy efficient – however, when searching for ways to play-up your interior and highlight specialties, obviously artificial light comes into play!

Even in the winter months, open your windows and choose window coverings that are stylish and offer privacy, while still letting natural light filter in to your space.  This example is great because with all the windows open, artificial light and fixtures aren't needed until the late evening hours!  This is true of almost any home!

It is also possible to purchase lights that give off the effect of natural light and most of these options are cost-friendly and save money on energy!

Fixtures

Fixtures have recently received the make over of a lifetime – and a return to the originals is what's most popular.  Edison-style, original bulbs that expose the true nature of lighting mechanisms are one of the most sought-after styles, including industrial fixtures. Shades and coverings are a thing of the past, however, with this new trend, you have to be strategic with your placement of such bulbs – as they will offer direct, artificial light that is strong and heavy.

Our suggestion, with these newer exposed fixture trends, is to choose lower-wattage bulbs, and use more of them. Whether you cluster them together in a bunch, or hang them in a series (as seen here) – they can still provide a good amount of light, even to darker spaces.

If you choose fixtures that are more permanent, like row lights and large hanging lamps, make sure you choose to pair them with larger furnishings.  For example, over a dining room table or over a coffee table or sofa.  After all, lights are meant to be functional and utilitarian – offering light and comfort to areas we use most in our home.

Interior styles

It is truly possible to find the perfect lights and lighting fixtures for any interior style. This modern, yet classic space has used candle light in the fireplace area, and spotlights to highlight the great bookshelf design.  For modern, Scandinavian or minimalist design, use exposed bulbs and industrial-style fixtures. For more classic, traditional, or eclectic styles, you a have various options available to you and what fits your space best.

Want to know what's best about natural light? It fits best with any space! So before thinking about any lights particular to your room, theme and taste, open all the windows and then take notice of where the darkest areas in each room are! Those are the areas that will need lamps and small fixtures to make sure the room is even with light.

Don't give your interior all the attention – exterior lighting, as seen here, can be great for your home as well!

Light trends

Popular light trends include a combination of different types of light! As seen here, natural light, standing lamps and large, industrial hanging fixtures are all combined to provide the perfect amount of light to this space.

This space is modern, yet eclectic – so naturally the eclectic use of different lighting is great! Don't ever feel pressured to match all of your fixtures or table lamps – this trend is a thing of the past.  Think artistically and strategically about the fixtures you choose, there are new options everyday for a reason!

The real light trends right now lay in their ability to be of great design and energy efficient! Another trend is to combine lights with furnishings (for example, built-in lights with end and accent tables!) for a multi-functional use of space!

Lighting of the future

The future of lighting lay in its ability to be programmable and also the use of LEDs.  What do we mean by programmable lights? We mean lights that know when you walk into a room, lights that know to adjust to the light you prefer and according to the season and time of day it is.  Lights that recognize that you need brighter light to read than your partner does, and the list goes on.

There are already affordable options for programmable lights, for example, motion sensor lights that only turn on when your presence tips them off – but now programs are taking it even further – and we're thankful for it! These options are expensive upfront with installation costs, but tend to be a worthy long-term investment as they will save you money over time! Give everything a try once!
