The world is full of parenting books and guides for creating the right environment fore a child to thrive. It is a bit mind-boggling how much information exists about such subjects. It’s important to take the practice of parenting in small steps. While you work on the child rearing, we can help you with the interior decorating. Children’s rooms are havens for colourful, imaginative décor. They can actually be quite fun to design because they bring out our most unabashed sense of creativity. Of course, there are also more seriously considerations to keep in mind like safety and functionality. The ideal child’s bedroom combines the two in perfect harmony. Whether your children share a bedroom or this room is being designed for the newest addition to the family, here are 6 important steps to take when decorating your child’s bedroom.

Deal with the space you have first

When beginning to decorate or redecorate your child’s bedroom it’s important to keep a few things in mind before starting. For one, it is important to keep the room clean and clutter free. Children need stable and secure environments. Plus, toys strewn across the floor is a tripping hazard to you both. This can be difficult in a child’s room because it is usually filled with toys and your youngster might not be able to keep up on task of cleanliness on their own. Therefore, simple and easy storage is in order. Remember to take advantage of vertical space and consider a bed with built-in drawers for storage. We also love the idea of going modular in the children’s bedroom like we can see in this example. This way you are sure to be using every inch of the room to its fullest.

Think about safety

As we mentioned above, clutter can be a tripping hazard. This is not the only thing to watch out for in your kid’s room. Because children are young, they are particularly curious about the world around them and have not acquired the caution of age. This means that they have a penchant for eating things that are unsafe and for putting their fingers in places where they don’t belong. It’s best to give your child’s room a safety sweep to ensure that there aren’t any impending dangers. Getting some outlet covers for electrical outlets is essential if you child is younger than 5 or 6. Ensuring that large pieces of furniture, especially those with drawers, like dressers and wardrobes are fastened to the floor. Keep plastic bags, products with chemicals in them, and other choking hazards out of this space, too.

Consider different options

Because children are small, you have more relative space to work with in designing an all-inclusive children’s space. Their furniture is littler that that belonging to a full-grown person, so it can be worth entertaining the idea of including a study area, play space, bookshelf or rocking chair in the bedroom. You could even think further outside the box and try something like this. This little mezzanine allows these youngsters place to play in an otherwise small bedroom. Kids love to climb, so including a latter that reaches into their own little zone is something most children would love. The addition of the climbing wall is another fun idea as long as the rocks don’t go up too high. Loft beds are also a clever solution for accommodating an older child in a small bedroom. They can study at a desk beneath the raised bed.

Creativity on the walls

It’s important to surround your little ones with creative outlets and uplifting messages. Generally speaking, we want to encourage our children’s imaginations and all them to express themselves. Today there are tons of different wallpapers and adhesive sticker murals available for cultivating the ideal space for your child to thrive. With these materials you can fill the walls with their favourite cartoon characters, superheroes, and animals. Another fun idea is to cover a portion of the all in chalkboard paint. Many of us can attest to a time when we drew on the walls at home or at school. Because this no-no is so enticing, your child will likely take to the idea of drawing with chalk on their walls with enthusiasm. We even suggest getting them some colourful chalk to add to enhance their creative expression.

Choosing the bed

Our little ones grow and change rather quickly so we must take the type of bed we have to choose wisely. Plus, youngsters often share the bedroom so there is also the question of whether to choose a single bed or a bunk bed. Once your child has grown out of a crib we suggest giving them a little bed with some personal flair. There are beds in the shape of airplanes, princess castles and just about everything in between to make naptime a little less dreadful. For bedrooms housing multiple children, there is still space to get creative with the bunk beds. This bedroom by A! Emotional living & work for example, has a mini-mezzanine that extends from the ceiling to make way for a third bed rather than relying on a traditional bunk bed. Remember to consider opting for a bed with built-in drawers underneath.

Bookshelf or shelves

Finally, it’s time to take a closer look at storage. Because your child is young and clean up doesn’t exactly come naturally, finding a fitting storage solution can be a bit of a conundrum. Colour coding can help your child to learn to categorise different toys or articles of clothing when it comes time to clean. You can place colourful bins on large shelves like these ones. Take advantage of vertical space for storing items off limits to your child like glass objects, photo frames, or lotions. A bookshelf can also work for stacking books and toys because these items stay visible so your kid can find them next time they’re looking to play. Keeping clean up and storage simple will lead to the biggest success in teaching your child organisational skills. Just remember to make sure these taller implements are sturdy and won’t topple over under their weight.
