If you're like us, then as seasons, moods and certain styles come and go, you feel inspired to change things up a bit! You would be amazed how redecorating and shifting a few things around in your apartment can not only change the feel of the space – but change your own sensual experience within your home.

Establishing a new look doesn't mean purchasing all new furniture or breaking the bank – what it means is that it's time to be strategic! We suggest that you make a plan – for example, which rooms need change the most? Which spaces are you unhappy with? Secondly, make a budget, get all of your supplies and last but certainly not least, free a weekend of your time up to get started!

Below we will give you ideas for everything from wall art to DIY furniture and proper ways to use plants! Here, we have another Ideabook to give you suggestions for smaller, one-bedroom apartments!

Paint one wall

One of the most efficient and cheap ways to redecorate your space for maximum output is to use colour strategically. Depending on the size of your apartment – if you decide to take our advice and paint only one wall – one bucket of paint should most certainly be enough.

Choose colours that carefully play with your pre-existing furnishings and decorations. In this example, the bright yellow wall looks exquisite with the multi-coloured bookshelf and the neutral couch and flooring. Look around your space and try to find one colour that ties all of the pieces together – a colour they all have in common.  Once you've discovered it, choose a lighter or darker shade of that colour and start painting! You will be amazed at the visual atmosphere this can create in almost any room – but particularly living rooms and bedrooms!

Wall art, posters and frames

The type of art you choose for your apartment can make a detrimental change in your living space. If you like things more traditional – then stick with one type of wall art – posters, graphic prints, or framed photographs.  However, when thinking about redecorating your space we suggest that you consider combining different media of art for the full effect!

One tip: while perusing through frames, stick with basic, timeless frames with white or off-white matting. Choosing the basics will allow you to change and shift around your art. You can change the pictures or prints depending on the season, etc; while maintaining the same aesthetic.

While redecorating, take a good look at your space – make sure to place larger statement pieces on the largest wall and keep accent walls a bit more bare as to let the larger pieces speak for themselves.  Similar to the example shown here, if you have a lot of smaller or medium-sized pieces, then choose bold shelves where everything can be combined for a more creative, fun feel.

Build something new

A weekend is plenty of time to start DIY projects that can make a significant difference in your home. Whether you're super crafty and full of ideas or if you're not too handy with power tools – it's OK! There are plenty of options that can be built within 48-hours and require minimal construction.

Think about easier projects – bookshelves, simple tables, or window/wall benches to create more seating with unused space.  As seen in this example, a simple construction project has become the perfect solution for difficult corner space!  These 'shelves' double as bookshelves and holders for flowers vases, figurines, etc;

We suggest searching through the homify website or this to find some great project ideas that you can easily finish over the weekend to renew your space!

Bookshelves

If you're like most homeowners, you have an extensive collection of books, magazines and maps accumulating in several places in your home. Contrary to popular belief – these items are not junk. Pull all of your reading materials together and properly store them in your bookshelves!

One suggestion is to colour coordinate all reading materials and rather than lining them up in a traditional fashion – try lining some and stacking others to create an interesting environment for the eyes.  If you don't have enough reading material to fill your shelves – that is OK! Try aligning the books in different patterns and fill the empty space with decorative features such as unique book holders and figurines.

Invest in one new piece of furniture

One way to redecorate you apartment in one weekend is to purchase one new piece of furniture. Now, this can go one of two ways – either you purchase a dream piece that costs a bit more money (but will last a lifetime) or you pick something special that will work for your short-term home.  Either way, rearranging old pieces and wall art, while adding that new special piece in the mix, can completely change your home!

This also might seem like the easiest option on our provided list – as no construction and paint are necessary.

When thinking about that one special item to purchase – make it a timeless statement piece like shown here. Both the sofa and the light fixture speak for themselves while the rest of the decor can be switched and changed with little notice.

Add plants

Last – but NOT least – bring plants into your apartment for a new look! It's even good for your health, we swear! It's up to you if you decide on using a lot of smaller plants – or like the example shown here, which uses one small plant to the right and a larger tropical tree for a statement to the left.

We suggest doing some research on house plants that have air-cleaning abilities, or better yet, choose herbs and vegetables that can grow well indoors for a more utilitarian feel. Herbs can also give off a fresh aroma – but be careful, because some (like Rosemary) can be quite strong.

Plants – similar to home décor – can vary in size, shape and colours.  So choose what makes you happy and healthy and works with your space!
