The kitchen island is an extension of the counter to keep things that are required frequently which can also maintain aesthetics of the kitchen. It can comprise of a wide range of options from a simple wooden table to an elaborate marble or stone topped counter with cupboards and sink. A kitchen island has to be free standing space like a typical island in the middle of the ocean unattached to any wall or counter. Its main purpose is to keep the kitchen clutter free without overcrowding the space so designers always maintain around 40-45 inches space between kitchen counter and the island.
Let us explore some of the elegant kitchen island designs created by our designers that maintain the triangular relationship between three essentials sections of the kitchen comprising of workstation, cooking area and the sink for seamless work flow.
Blend of classic and industrial design
If the drop down lamps in this picture represents industrial design then the pillars holding up the island’s granite counter are reminiscent of classic era. This light hued shaker kitchen has pretty steel stools below the island counter that can turn it into a multi-function zone for either a quick meal or by children to do homework when mother is cooking. The wooden countertop that takes up another section of the island works as a handy workstation to prep up for a meal before cooking.
Modern Elegance
This wide kitchen island shaped in a modulated ‘L’ design makes an impressive statement with marble topped counters that are divided into two separate sections for varied tasks. While the black topped counter with bar stools is meant for eating, the wider cream one works as a cooking area cum work counter with wide sink. Massive drawers under the counters provide ample storage space for utensils and cutlery and are easy to open wide metal handles.
All in one kitchen island
This design illustrates how kitchen islands can function independently as work stations with wash basin and elegant drop down lamps spilling light over it. This design creates a large and deep storage space for crockery, tableware, glassware and utensils. Ideally usable as a work area for the cook this counter is wide enough to be used as a breakfast bar with a couple of stools.
Floating Island
The shape of this island is like a curvy wave of wave with white marble counter set above light brown wooden cupboards. Designers of this modern kitchen were asked to create a functional area that does not restrict free movement in and out of the kitchen and they have done just that with the island which tapers into a rectangular shape before the counter. Circular glass table has been created above the counter in the curvaceous section of the island that can work as a snack bar cum conversation area with two high bar stools around it. Charming crystal chandelier above the island and recessed lighting in the ceiling section keeps the kitchen well lit.
Country style island
Designed like a huge table running parallel to the kitchen counter this black and brown contrast island is the perfect place for the cook and assistants to prep up a meal before cooking. Instead of having several small drawers the designers have only created six large black drawers with classic brass handles and an open shelf below it for extra storage space ideal for large vessels.
Modern mini kitchen island
The enormous space in this contemporary kitchen inspired the designer to create a standalone island that can be used by the cook as a preparation area before meals. Built on two levels to allow multiple people to work together, the island also has a glass circular table of glass jutting on one side that can be used as a breakfast nook. Steel drop down chandelier adds to the modern outlook of this kitchen with light grey furniture and wooden floor.
Cooktop Island
By keeping the cook top away from the main kitchen counter the designer has created a more focused work area. Removing the cook-top away from kitchen counter also moves away the chimney and creates more cupboard space. Linear island design ensures that there is the space to chop, organize and slice as you continue cooking. It even provides a perfect place for an assistant to sit and help the cook by gathering all the necessary stuff.
