Small, narrow and annoyingly unkept, hallways are typically seen as convenient access points to different areas of our home. Not normally areas that you stop, contemplate or rest in, it's easy to forget that these areas are just as ready for some great design as our living rooms or bedroooms. If you've forgotten all about your hallways and corridors, you might want to take some time to reconsider, as most guests will be using this area to access your dining room, bathrooms and guests bedrooms.

Taking time to make your hallway dramatic and stylish will show your attention to detail and care for the lifestyle and taste of your home. Yes, you will want to figure out the proper furnishings and decor, but you'll also want to start with a firm base and this will include lighting and colour scheme. We have six beautiful examples below that show proper lighting techniques for your hallways in order for you to make a great first impression.

1. Direct spotlights

Natural stone and rustic wood stairs – what's not to love in this rustic and modern home? In halllways with this much character, the last thing you want to do is distract guests from appreciating the lovely raw materials. However, you also want the space to be well-lit to enhance the experience.

Direct spotlights will do the trick in areas such as these, which is what this designer chose.  Another option would be to have floor lighting running up the angle of the stairs as an added design technique and safety feature.

2. Whimsical hanging lights

In larger homes, entryways, corridors and halllways can be on such a grand scale that you're left feeling overwhelmed and underinspired. One quick way to take care of this is to go with a darker wall colour and some whimsical hanging lights that will naturally scale down the space. Both techniques have been successful employed here and the mix of light grain wood structural details really balances out the darker areas of the hallway! For best results, use hanging lights at different lengths for some added depth and dimension.

3. Feature lighting for your bookshelf wall

Contemporary design is brilliant and this minimal staircase with a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf are proof. There are two levels of stairs show in this corridor also with a partially transparent partition – yet the only light sources you see are the feature lighting in the bookshelves With feature lighting this great, mix up your bookshelf design by adding books and unique accessories memorabilia.

4. Linearity with lights and design

The colour scheme, bright furnishings and carpeting all add a high-end design dimension to this corridor. Something you might see straight out of a design magazine, right? It's one of our favourites on this list and the the linearity of the hallway is improved by the inclusion of straight, well-spaced spotlights. Although the hallway is narrow and full of a lot of decor and furnishings, the spotlights brighten it up to bring a more open feel. Lighting can truly change everything.

5. Low light for a natural mood

How beautiful and unique is this corridor with a wooden, winding staircase? The inclusion of two windows adds a somber amount of light, yet the floor lighting adds a pop of brightness that showcases the staircase in a brilliant way. The shadows of each stair play with the backdrop wall for a more playful look inspired by a childhood treehouse.

6. Natural light is best?

A hallway that also has direct access to the outdoors can be a rare find in homes, yet if you find yourself in a warmer, tropical climate it can be quite common. This covered indoor/outdoor hallway has an abundance of natural light and nature making it a knock out! Bamboo, vines and succulents are all great ways to make a hallway more tropical, or even Mediterranean. Notice that there aren't any artificial lights here – they're not needed!

Looking up for light inspiration is always a positive –  but sometimes look down, for hallway tile inspiration is just as beneficial. Don't forget to look everywhere when it comes to inspiration for your beautiful hom!
