Your first home is an exciting and often, mystifying, experience! You've completed all the paperwork, you've switched over the utilities and you've endured the stress we call moving. Now it's time to set up your new apartment the way you've always dreamed of. No matter how small those four walls are, you're always in a position to make it customised and personalised as your own.

In only five easy steps you can transform your new apartment into a proper, adult living space and transform your life from student-budget to adult-sophisticated living in the blink of an eye! Let's find out how…

1. Start with a strong (white) base

To make your life loads easier, it's always best to start with a clean, fresh base. This preferably should be white, but any light neutral will work as well. If not white, then we suggest a light grey, as these two colours tend to compliment most traditional/modern furnishings and accessories.

When you move into your first apartment, this clean base should already be established by your landlord, but if not, ask permission to paint walls white or another neutral. If you're looking for something bold and fun, try a wallpaper feature wall that's removable!

Tip: Although you're renting, most landlords won't be opposed to you offering to paint the apartment a netural colour. They will, however, be less lenient about bright and bold colours, as these are harder to cover up and will cost more to maintain in the long run.

2. Only keep the things you need

Assuming that your first apartment is that of average size for a young professional or student, try to rid yourself for any items, furnishings, accessories, decor, etc; that might just be clutter in your new home.

Keep large-scale furnishings and accessories wall art or family mementos that you wish. There's no point in starting with a great, clean base if you instantly clutter it with student-style decor!

3. Arrange furnishings strategically

Now that you've painted everything fresh and gathered only those items which you wish to invest your time and energy in, it's now time to arrange everything. The living room is where this will be most important, as this is the most communal space in any home where entertaining and nights with friends are concerned.

Make sure to make use of corner space (as seen here!) and arrange furnishings out of view of direct sunlight and to make for intimate, private areas of conversation.

4. Add wall art

Don't forget wall art! We wanted you to make those beautiful walls a great base for a reason! Throw out old college-style posters and ripped prints. Start fresh by getting acquainted with local artists, or your favourite artists in general and invest in serious pieces from these invididuals.

If you're still on a budget, but love some serous wall art, then consider cool graphic prints and items that you might find at local flea or antique markets!

5. Details, details, details

Lastly, don't forget the small items that will really pull all of your rooms together. This can include fruit baskets or a fresh bouquet of flowers on the dining table, exquisite coffee table books on the coffee table or a bookshelf, highlight-lighting over art pieces for a gallery-like effect, and so on. The possibilities are truly endless, but make sure not to over-clutter. This living room showcases everything perfectly, and has included a wonderful amount of detail accessories without looking overdone. Use it as a guide!

We hope your start apartment will be a joyous experience – it's always fun to finally make something truly yours
