Located in the UNESCO World Heritage listed old town in Dubrovnik, Croatia, this gorgeous home has had its interior stripped and remodelled, while thankfully retaining the rustic facade that makes this part of the world so magical. Constructed from locally sourced stone, this home was built to last hundreds of years, and so far so good, but that doesn't mean the interior doesn't require a little makeover every now and then.

Limited in what they could change, the designers of this home had to be resourceful with the space available, and respectful of the original structure, and we think they've done a great job meeting the challenge of designing a modern family home despite the restraints. With three bedrooms and a living and dining area you could not want for more, but that's exactly what they've given us with a gorgeous garden feature including a new pergola.

So let's check out this romantic hideaway that pays tribute to the past while offering a modern lifestyle.

The breathtaking exterior

It's difficult not to fall in love instantly with the facade of this home! Gorgeous stone, in fitting with the style of the area and perfectly complemented by the home next door, sets the tone of this classical courtyard.

The new pergola looks great with the planter boxes, and adds a Mediterranean flavour. But don't let the rustic exterior fool you, because as you'll see this is a modern home ready for a 21st century family.

The living room

With a very narrow structure it was always going to be important to make the most of every space, and they've done a great job with this minimalist living room.

The neutral colour palette allows the homeowners to set the style, and the tile flooring manages to straddle the line between the traditional and the modern. The sparse furniture is all about functionality, without excess, making the room feel larger.

The dining room and kitchen

As you turn around you can see just how economical this home is, with a small kitchen that has everything you need. The dining table is simple and modern, and the white makes the most of the limited light.

We especially like how they have used the window box for decoration and storage, allowing for some personal flair without cramping the room.

The master bedroom

Again simplicity is the goal in the bedroom, but the style takes on a decidedly more rustic feel with the hardwood floors and the rafters featuring prominently.

With a lick of paint the interior designers have blended the ceiling with the walls, while still maintaining a natural feel. The colour palette also has a function, cooling the room down, ready for Croatia's hot summers!

The bathroom

That mosaic looks just stunning. The simple white colour scheme allows the turquoise to really stand out, allowing our attention to move straight to the fantastic feature piece, which again draws on the traditional in a modern setting.

We really like how they have left the natural wood colour of the rafters in the bathroom, giving it an organic feel that works great with the flower patterns of the mosaic. As for the fittings, everything is modern, and simple, with the double vanities adding a touch of luxury.

Guest bedroom

The view out of that window is more than enough for decoration, but if you don't agree the unadorned walls are ripe for personal style. The natural wood of the hardwood floors again looks stunning, and the simple green rug adds a splash of colour.

We love how in order to make the most of the space there is no more furnishing than necessary, but the room still has a lot of personality.

The garden

This lush little corner is a great showpiece for the natural stone, bringing the natural environment into a private space. The flax looks fantastic, and it's always a good idea to use hardy plants which bring a sense of the rugged wild to complement the stone, plus they are very low maintenance. The ceramic pots are a great addition, and really reinforce that romantic Mediterranean style.

We think this home is straight out of a fairytale, and we hope you loved it as much as we did, but if you want some more ideas about what to do with limited space we've got something even smaller!
