In Canada, there is nothing that we like better than some sunshine and fresh air in summer, making up for those cold winters.

The problem is that we often don't have that much space available to us, especially in the bigger cities. Urbanization means smaller properties and smaller properties mean limited exterior spaces. Often we are lucky if we have any greenery!

This is why it so important to utilize your balcony space. Sometimes we end up overlooking it or simply using it for storage, but today we are going to show you just how much potential it holds. These eight balcony revamps, by top professionals from around the world, are proof that a little bit of space goes a long way.

1. An outdoor living room

This design shows us that even with limited space, you can end up with an outdoor living room on your balcony with the right design and strategy.

Invest in lightweight yet comfortable outdoor furniture that won't take up too much space and just like that, you've extending your living space to the outdoors. All that is missing is a strong cup of coffee and your sunglasses!

2. A mini-garden

Just because you don't have a garden, doesn't mean that your balcony can't double up as one.

Lay down AstroTurf and invest in some pot plants, flowers or a little herb garden. Instantly you'll transform this space into an outdoor haven where you feel at one with nature.

3. The sheltered balcony

If your balcony is covered or sheltered, you can afford to be a little bit more creative with the furniture that you choose. A covering means that the weather conditions won't affect the furniture pieces as much as if they were exposed in the sunlight or the rain.

In this design, by Studio Marco Piva, we can see how an antique chest of drawers has been placed on the balcony, adding classic charm and personality to the space.

4. Get colourful

If you're a more creative soul, use your balcony to bring some colour and vibrancy to your home! Opt for brightly coloured cushions, a range of patterns and some bold tones throughout for an eclectic look and feel like the designers have done here.

This truly creates a Bohemian style, where you'll instantly be relaxed the moment you step onto your balcony.

5. Or go for plain and simple

If bright colours aren't for you, opt for a neutral colour palette for an air of sophistication and elegance. Ensure that the space is still charming and comfortable, however, by investing in cushy pillows, warm throws and some gorgeous accessories and decor for a touch of personality.

6. Add your own shade

If you don't have a balcony covering but you'd like to enjoy this space as much as possible, invest in an umbrella or a gazebo. Even on the hottest day, you'll still feel as cool as a cucumber relaxing on your fabulous balcony.

7. Feel like a dip

If you have the space, why not add a hot tub or a swimming pool to your balcony area?

Not only do these features add a gorgeous design element to an outdoor space, but they are wonderful for those hot summer days! Your balcony will also be the place that everyone wants to visit for a barbeque or a Sunday lunch!

8. Multi-functional

Even if your balcony space is limited, make it as multi-functional as possible like these designers have done. Install a little grill, have a table and shelves for storing cutlery and crockery as well as games and add some greenery too.
