Depending on the size of your bathroom, you mirror might be either a large-scale design feature, or a small vanity-esque piece of material. Besides the shower, the mirror will be one of the most-used objects of your bathroom, so it should be taken into great consideration when being replaced or purchased.

We have attempted to help you with this issue, by narrowing it down to seven key things to consider when installing a bathroom mirror – for large and small bathrooms alike!

Size of your bathroom

Of course, as with any room, the size will determine the type, style and size of the furnishings and decor you add to it! A large-scale mirror will look utterly misplaced in a small, Europeean bathroom, whereas a tiny mirror might miss the point in a large one.

The key to this issue is to make sure that your mirror takes up no more than 1/4 of the size of the entire bathroom.  Whichever wall you decide to place it on, make sure it covers no more than 1/2 the wall – unless it's a special case! Multiple mirrors can also work too for more eclectic, average-scale bathrooms.

What's your style?

Secondly, of course your style will have a lot to do with the mirror that you choose! For more rustic bathrooms, round or wood-framed mirrors are great, and for eclectic bathrooms you can choose the most unique mirrors that you want.

We suggest that for modern, colonial, minimalist and Scandinavian bathrooms that you keep your mirrors square, or rounded and without a framing feature.

Colour

Obviously the colours of your bathroom will influence the colours your mirror reflects – but have you considered tinted mirrors? Slightly coloured mirrors can help you when your natural lighting is positioned directly on your bathroom mirror, blinding anyone that might attempt to use it.

Try lighter colours in your bathroom, and a slightly blue-tinted mirror to offset this effect!

What to do when working with small mirrors

Small mirrors are absolutely no problem – most bathrooms are equipped with them. Make sure when working with small mirrors that you place them according to the average human height as to avoid guests bending down, or standing on their tip-toes.

The standard mirror in this bathroom is placed perfectly according to height and allows for full reach during cleaning!

Reflections matter

This large-scale mirror is wonderful in this small-ish bathroom – we love the floor-to-ceiling design, as well as the light feature that surrounds the edges.

The geometric wallpaper might make for an interesting reflection, but do to the mirrors size and placement directly opposite of the door, it gives you a great wide-angle and a rather neutral palette to take a second look at your outfit!

Do your homework

Just as with any appliance, furnishing or functional item, there is a lot to consider when looking at the materials that compose of mirrors.

There's stain-resistant, water-proof and scratch-free – as well as steam-free that will quickly relieve itself of post-shower steam for a quick and seamless process.

Illuminations

And finally, if you're stuck with a bathroom with no natural light, or a lack of overhead lighting, why not use the mirror as a multifunctional piece of lighting? Not only will this add a tad bit of light into your smaller bathroom, but it will give you the best kind of light for washing your face, doing body examinations and applying makeup or hair items.

Be smart about the type of Iight you use – choose light sources and bulbs that will give off a more natural, bright tone, as well as are sustainable and eco-friendly.
