This Korean home is designed by the design and build company Wooden House. Using timber frame construction they craft beautiful homes, inside and out.

On a large plot, they built on a construction area of 88.49 square meters to create a home with a total floor area of 135.81 square meters. With most of Korea's population living in high-rise apartment buildings, this amount of land is quite the luxury. And whilst Korea boasts the largest apartment sizes, this home still offers a good chunk more than the average amount of space.

Amid the towers

The house seems somewhat out of place amongst the soaring skyscrapers! The traditional typology of rectilinear forms with gable roofs is given a contemporary edge through the use of modern materials.

The zinc roof cladding returns down the edge, creating little hats of sorts on each volume.

The back garden

An organic cobbled path leads up to the garden facing deck. Pergola structures abound and timber is used to bring a warm, homely material to the mix.

The stairs and more!

The staircase is clever and playful. Constructed from timber and black steel, it surprises at every turn. No space is wasted here!

A platform is built up at the base which forms a seat surface; while a cutout at the window allows one to sit at the desk and enjoy a cup of coffee or do some work while enjoying the sun streaming in. Tall inbuilt bookcase units flank the side to store the books. The entire arrangement is thoughtful and fun.

A little nook

A look past the stair, in the other direction, shows that the first flight of stairs is solid. The white base is contrasted by the timber risers and treads.

A single step at the base protrudes past the rest of the structure and is constructed entirely of timber; emphasising the first step, the first moment, of moving from the lower level to the upper level. This pause is effective in its poetic simplicity.

The living room

The living room is absolutely beautiful! The large window and door arrangement features a fanlight above, rendering the end wall almost entirely of glass.

The furniture is simple, elegant and has that Scandinavian charm that everyone in the world has come to love.

The kitchen

The kitchen opts for clean rational lines but doesn't shy away from a little pattern, colour and texture. The sleek black and white cabinetry is accompanied by a fantastic timber table that wraps around the kitchen island. The stone applied to the back wall is a strong feature that completely changes the appearance of the space.
