Just what does eclectic mean anyway? The eclectic style reshuffles the rule book, so to speak, in that it mixes and matches the old with the new, East and West, opulent and humble, and even the extravagant and the lackluster. To put it simply, the eclectic home is the curated you.

What they are not, however, is a free-for-all styling parade. If you throw in a little of this, a little of that and a dash of that other thing into a room unsystematically, it'll look exactly like what it is: a mess. What makes the eclectic style so alluring also makes it tricky to master, so you have to be careful not to cross the thin line between cornerstone and chaos.

But when it's done well, eclectic decor showcases your confidence in your own style while still adhering to the fundamentals of good design. This playful and personal home design schemec shakes up the norm and bridges the gap between other looks. If you want to know how to master the mix, keep reading!

Think about the layout

When planning the layout of an eclectic home, it's easy to get caught up in which colours, textures, and patterns will tie the whole look together. But it's very important not forget about placement. The layout is one of the most important things in a room. It's what will make a comfortable room transform into a room you want to stay in. So before you go crazy buying eclectic decoration, spend a good amount of time pinpointing where each piece of furniture will go. You may find you don't have space for that quirky upcycled crate.

Think of a theme and colour scheme

In the eclectic home, one colour should serve as a unifying factor throughout the design and serve as an equalizer. Whether your colour is a lime green or an off-white like we see here, you should consistently return to it while decorating.

Find an unusual focal point

When you arrange your layout, remember that although the eclectic style involves combining a wide variety of items, styles, and periods, the curated look shouldn't lack focus.

We suggest creating a focal point (or accentuating an existing one) with an eye-catching element, such as an accent wall, fireplace, or bold decorative item like the one we see here. I mean, who else has glass panels installed in their second storey floorboards? That will certainly catch your eye!

Don't hold back, but don't go overboard either!

The eclectic style emphasises the importance of finding a balance in scale and symmetry. Similar lines generate design harmony, even if those pieces are of different styles and textures, but don't sacrifice organisation for diversity.

We suggest putting a limit on the number of contrasting styles in one room to avoid a random, chaotic atmosphere.

Pick quirky accessories

The accessories are really the backbone to any eclectic home. They're what brings out the pop in those accent features, or transform your brick wall into a work of art.

You'll want to pick accessories that coordinate with your colour scheme and building materials. Things like rugs, paintings, and throw pillows are convenient and easy ways to bring a contemplated mismatch to any room.
