There's nothing like a good, proactive spring (or summer, or fall… ) cleaning!

Tidying up can help you feel at peace with your space without having to bring out the buckets of paint, handsaw, and screwdriver.  If you're feeling tired of your space, it could simply be that you need to roll up your sleeves, and instead of purchasing new items right away, take a look at what you can downsize. Getting rid of the six simple things listed below requires very intentional sweep through the home in order to look at your household things with a critical eye, freeing yourself of these pesky objects that are often left ragged, stockpiled, and abandoned:

The Kitchen Sponge that has Overstayed its Welcome

Everyone has done it – they've let the kitchen sponge just sort of take up residency as part of the permanent kitchen landscape. For many, the kitchen sink is something they use every single day. Keeping this space fresh and positive is important, and that tired sponge, old hunk of steel wool, or soggy washcloth may be messing with your fresh kitchen vibes. If you find that you've accumulated these items in the bottom of your sink, it may be time to evaluate which of these items are actually serving your purpose, and which items simply get moved from one spot to the other as you shuffle around for extra dishwashing room.

Really, How Many Pairs of Shoes do You Need?

They say you really only know a person when you've walked in their shoes – it seems that for some, you'd have to spend the entire day going in and out of their closet. How many pairs of shoes do you really need?

Chances are, when it comes to shoes, the ones you haven't been wearing much are the ones that you really won't wear ever again. A pair of shoes that hovers in limbo – for example, being slightly too uncomfortable to wear but too expensive to get rid of – may find a better home when donated to a local thrift store or sold on consignment. Footwear is for walking. If you're hanging onto shoes that no longer fit your feet or your style, toss 'em. If you're not willing to get rid of any shoes yet, you can always reorganize them in a cabinet like the one pictured here, whose neat outlines provide a practical artistic frame for your footwear! Piles of Newspapers and Magazines

Yes, it was interesting, but no – you're not likely to read through them again. As often is the case with magazines and newspapers, once is enough, and then they slowly accumulate in stacks beside the bedside table and living room couch. You can recycle them or use them for craft projects, or you can reconfigure a way to displays them, adding character to your space without cluttering it. This photo is a perfect example of a home library full of books – displayed in such an interesting and dynamic shelving unit, this could-be clutter is turned into an enticing array of good reads.

If your space isn't large enough to for a full-on library, you can pick up some tips and tricks for decorating smaller spaces in this ideabook.

Go Drawer-Diving

Closets have earned a reputation for hiding scary creatures behind their doors, but your seemingly innocent kitchen drawers also have the ability to get freaky the farther back you go. Take some time to get rid of that third can opener, extra plastic containers, defunct rice steamer, cracked crock pot, random cork, and whatever else is taking up that space in the back of your drawers.

Once your kitchen purge is complete, you may like to consider pull-out racks like this one (a kitchen planner can help you look for the right design). These make it easy to capitalize on all of the space in your cabinets, even the deep dark corners in the very back.

Organize Your Pantry

While your pantry doesn't have to look this meticulously organized, you can gain some peace of mind by reading the dates on your pantry items, combining the two half-used jars of dried basil into one, and bringing forward those items that you've been meaning to use (the mango chutney that you got for chutney chicken, or the sun-dried tomatoes you purchased with every intention of making your own homemade pizza). Perhaps the most rewarding of any clean-up task, organizing the pantry often results in several tasty home-cooked meals as you use those ingredients that had gotten lost in the clutter.

Towels and Linens

You don't have to go through every since piece of clothing that you own in order to feel like you've been able to de-clutter. Sometimes, going through the linen closet is all it takes. Towels with holes can be cut up and used as cleaning rags, as can the mattress covers that have lost their elasticity. If you're a fan of kid's projects, let your children re-purpose the old linens for making forts and doing painting projects before they're tossed into landfill. Organizing your linens can be ever so satisfying, as the square shapes make for neat folds and a crisp-looking stack once you're done downsizing.
