Nature
in our daily lives: the little house by the sea “We’d like a house where we can make our Sunday paella and a barbecue with friends; with an outdoor shower, with hot water, where we can wash off the sand from the beach. And last but not least a sofa where we can have a siesta while watching TV.” There are few events in our lives that don’t leave a written mark. Events, situations and traditions that are remembered by photographs, with a few words written at the bottom or on the borders, quick notes on a diary, sketches on a paper napkin from a random bar… However, two things to remember! First, not everything has to be recorded on a material format, such as on a picture; second, these events-‐ situations-‐traditions are always linked to specific spaces. They are, no doubt, what have inspired me when designing this little house. I was lucky that some customers started to express their wishes as memories from the past and not as a program (number of bedrooms, bathrooms, where and how they wanted their dining room and how, like sometimes happens, the water from the roof must be removed). The owner of “the little house by the sea” had inherited it not in the best condition and he wanted to remodel it so it could be re-‐habited. He wasn’t that interested in what the house must have but in the moments that must be lived in it. And that’s what happened. That inheritance, something normally regarded as tangible became an inheritance of spaces, since the owner’s desire was that of bringing together the spatial conditions that allowed him to recreate those moments he had enjoyed there: every weekend, every holiday with his parents, sister and friends. Therefore, it is worth reflecting on this, our inheritance of spaces. That’s how, suddenly, I realize I am a wealthy heir: the football field where I saw my first football match with my dad when I was six is not just a place to see people playing sport but the perfect place to learn how to eat sunflower seeds. In my student bedroom you can have lunch, dinner, breakfast and you can also sleep and study. It is a complex machine but it works perfectly. Under my parents’ dining room table I discovered the perfect hiding place. That gap in the sofa, the biggest black hole I’ve ever known about, served well when I was a child to hide any kind of fish I didn’t like or all vegetables that, even if Popeye ate them, didn’t make me feel stronger nor were they pleasant on my palate. José Saramago, in his novel Blindness, reflects on the dialogue between two of his blind characters that wonder how they are. Both of them avoid describing their physical appearance and just talk about their personality, their inner being. In this sense, this house is a space where the project’s origin lays on the reproduction of some past activities the owner wants to restart. Thus, the actions lived in this little house discover and describe its inner being; even its owners’ and inhabitants’ features and expressions. Also, it was quite simple; it was about designing a barbecue and an outdoor shower that could express more than that; a space that, lengthwise, could face the TV but making it more personal… In this way, all these devices (the barbecue, the outdoor shower and the “siesta” sofa) can work individually, drawing and representing such an important concept: the meaning of a little house. Throughout this text, I’ve tried to express that subtle difference, which is the reason why the owner named this project as a “little house” and not just a house or home. A little house is just different from the others. This term, which does not refer to its “limited” 60 m2 area, has its own meaning and connotation. The owner, without being too aware of it, links this term to these actions mentioned above; inheritance of spaces that didn’t happen in his first house when he was a child but were instead reserved to weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday), and, therefore, different from those actions that used to happen on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning. These were events that are only allowed to be enjoyed in our free time. Regarding this, Georges Perec talks in his work Species of Spaces about the possibility to build apartments designed on heptadian rhythms, which means apartments with different spaces for each day of the week. These activities would change drastically at weekends. Perec says: “The Mondayery could ideally be a laundry-‐room (our country forebears did their washing on Mondays) and the Tuesdayery a drawing room (our urban forebears were happy to receive visitors on Tuesdays). This, obviously, would hardly be a departure from the functional. It would be better, while we are at it, to imagine a thematic arrangement, roughly analogue to that which used to exist in brothels [… ] The Mondayery, for example, would imitate a boat: you would sleep in hammocks, swab down the floor and eat fish. The Tuesdayery, why not, would commemorate one of Man’s great victories over Nature, the discovery of the Pole (North or South, to choice), or the ascent of Everest: the room wouldn’t be heated, you would sleep under thick furs, the diet would be based on pemmican (corned beef at the end of the month, dried beef when you’re flush). The Wednesdayery would glorify children, obviously, being the day on which, for a long time now, they haven’t had to go to school; it could be a sort of Dame Tartine’s Palace, gingerbread walls, furniture made from plasticine, etc.” However, the term little house is not just this, since this Project also shows the difference between the second house and the holiday home. Both concepts, well contextualised in the book Casa Collage by Xavier Monteys and Pere Fuertes, are different because of their essential characteristics in the design program, function, space and area. A holiday home is designed thinking about unscheduled life, about the time spent on hobbies. There is a huge difference between a main house where we live during the week and a holiday home. This simple reason is why the client demands his inheritance of spaces and wants to bring these memories together in his little house, not by building a new house but by getting back his space of action. To this aim, this project has been designed applying “inner architecture”: a simile of what is known as background noise. Background noise, which we don’t pay much attention to, is simply there, in a predictable way, always there, making noise endlessly, unnoticed. It is interesting to observe the different sounds that bustle and stress that background noise: a car horn, a dog barking at some pigeons, birds singing at dawn, your third-‐floor neighbour pretending she is Nina Simone, a father shouting “goal!!!” and so on. These sounds give some rhythm to that background noise, altering that sea of tranquillity that comes with the flatness of the first house. Those people who spend most of their time in cities may have the same feeling. When we go to the countryside, that background noise seems to dis-‐appear. That noise becomes the pleasant sound of birds singing, dogs barking, a donkey braying now and then, leaves announcing the coming wind. However, as days go on, these beautiful sounds end up being a background noise. I’ve always enjoyed categorizing the different background noises that are part of the places I’ve been to; they are part of the place’s essence and soul. That’s why I’ve wanted to re-‐ discover this house through its inner architecture, “squeezing” the characteristics of the use its owners are going to make of it; because trying to design it differently would have been a strident, egocentric and out of context act. Inner architecture, a simple pretext of nomenclature; architecture that cannot be seen; architecture of being; of recreating those moments that were experienced and want to be experienced again. Hay
pocos
acontecimientos
en
nuestras
vidas
que
no
dejen
huella
escrita.
Eventos,
situaciones
o

que
son
recordados
por

y
un

Sin

¡dos
apuntes
que
apuntar!:
el
primero,
que
no
todo
tiene
quedar
registrado
en
un
soporte
físico,
una
fotografía
por
ejemplo,
sino
que
también
puede
quedar
“grabado”
en
nuestra
memoria;
lo
segundo:
estos
acontecimientos-‐
situaciones-‐costumbres
nacen
ligados
a
determinados
espacios.
Son
estos,
sin
duda,
los
que
más
me
han
interesado
a
la
hora
de
proyectar
esta
vivienda
con
carácter
de
casita.
La
suerte,
que
tuve,
fue
que
los
clientes
empezaran
a
formular
sus
deseos
en
forma
de
acciones
a
re-‐vivir,
y
no
en
forma
de
programa
(número
de
dormitorios,
de
aseos
y
de

de
dónde
y
cómo
querían
el
comedor,
y
de
cómo,
a

las

El
propietario
de
“la
caseta
de
la
mar”
la
había
heredado
en
no
muy
buenas
condiciones
y
la
quería
re-‐formar
para
ser
re-‐
habitada.
No
le
interesaba
tanto
lo
que
la
vivienda
pudiera
tener,
sino
lo
que
en
ella
debía
acontecer.
Y
así
sucedió,
que
esa
herencia,
algo
que
comúnmente
se
piensa
en
términos
materiales,
se
convirtió
en
una
herencia
de
espacios,
pues
el
deseo
del
mismo
propietario
no
era
otro
que
volver
a
re-‐unir
las
condiciones
espaciales
que
le
permitiesen
re-‐producir
las
acciones
con
las
que
había
disfrutado:
un
fin
de
semana
tras
otro,
unas
vacaciones
tras
otras,
con
sus
padres,
hermana
y
amigos.
Cabe
aquí
reflexionar
sobre
ello,
sobre
nuestras
herencias
de
espacios.
Así,
a
bote
pronto,
me
doy
cuenta
de
que
soy
un
rico
heredero:
el
campo
de
fútbol
donde
veo
con
mi
padre
mi
primer
partido
a
los
seis
años,
no
es
un
lugar
donde
ver
deporte,
es
el
sitio
ideal
para
aprender
a
comer
pipas;
en
mi
habitación
de
estudiante
se
come,
se
cena,
se
desayuna,
se
duerme
y
se
estudia,
es
una
máquina
compleja
pero
funciona
a
la
perfección;
debajo
de
la
mesa
del
comedor
de
mis
padres
descubro
el
escondite
perfecto;
el
hueco
del
sofá,
de
cuando
era
bien
pequeño,
entre
el
respaldo
y
el
asiento,
es
el
mayor
de
los
agujeros
negros
que
he
conocido
hasta
el
momento,
pues
en
él,
y
durante
año
tras
año,
eché
todo
tipo
de
pescado
que
no
me
gustaba
y
todas
las
verduras
que,
por
mucho
que
se
las
comiera
Popeye,
a
mí
ni
me
ponían
fuerte
ni
desde
luego
eran
del
gusto
de
mi
paladar.
José
Saramago,
en
su
Ensayo
sobre
la
ceguera,
realiza
una
reflexión
entorno
al
diálogo
entre
dos
de
sus
personajes
ciegos
que
se
preguntan
cómo
son:
ambos
rehúyen
describir
su
forma
física
y
pasan
a
hablar
sobre
su
personalidad,
su
interioridad,
su
fondo.
En
este
sentido,
esta
vivienda
cuenta
cómo
un
espacio
tiene
su
punto
de
origen
proyectual
en
la
re-‐producción
de
ciertas
actividades
pasadas
y
que
quieren
ser
retomadas.
Así,
las
acciones
que
ocurren
en
esta
casita,
descubren
y
describen,
mejor
que
nadie,
su
fondo
y,
aún
más,
los
rasgos
y
gestos
de
sus
propietarios
y
habitantes.
Además,
era
bien
sencillo:
se
trataba
de
proyectar
una
barbacoa
que
no
fuera
sólo
eso;
una
ducha
al
exterior
que
no
fuera
sólo
eso,
y
un
espacio
que
en
su
medida
longitudinal
mirara
al
televisor
y
que,
¡adivina!,
no
fuera
sólo
eso.
De
esta
forma,
esta
especie
de
dispositivos,
la
barbacoa,
la
ducha
exterior
y
el
sofá
siestero,
pueden
funcionar
de
forma
autónoma,
dibujando
y
re-‐presentando
ese
término
que
tanta
significación
tiene:
la
palabra
casita.
A
lo
largo
del
texto,
he
buscado
mostrar
esa
sutil
diferencia
por
la
cual
el
propietario
de
la
vivienda
denominaba
a
este
proyecto
casita
y
no
casa
o
vivienda,
o
incluso
hogar,
y
es
que,
casita
es
diferente
al
resto.
Este
término,
que
nada
tiene
que
ver
con
que,
al
usar
un
diminutivo,
se
haga
referencia
a
su
“escasa”
superficie
de
60
m2,
tiene
una
connotación
y
significación
propia.
El
propietario,
sin
ser
demasiado
consciente,
lo
tiene
asociado
con
esas
acciones
mencionadas
anteriormente;
herencias
de
espacios
que
no
se
desarrollaban
en
la
que
era
su
vivienda
habitual
cuando
él
era
pequeño,
sino
que
quedaban
reservadas
para
el
fin
de
semana,
la
tarde
del
viernes,
el
sábado
y
el
domingo,
y
por
tanto,
eran
diferentes
a
las
del
lunes,
martes,
miércoles,
jueves
y
mañana
del
viernes.
Eran
hechos
que
sólo
podían
ocurrir
por
las
condiciones
que
permite
la
vida
en
el
tiempo
libre.
En
referencia
a
esto,
Georges
Perec
habla,
en
su
libro
Especies
de
Espacios,
sobre
la
posibilidad
de
construir
apartamentos
proyectados
con
ritmos
heptadianos,
esto
es,
con
diferentes
espacios
destinados
a
cada
día
de
la
semana
y
cuyas
actividades
cambiarían
drásticamente
cuando
se
acercase
el
fin
de
semana.
Perec
nos
dice:
“El
lunetorio
podría
ser
perfectamente
una
lavandería
(nuestros
ancestros
rurales
hacían
su
colada
el
lunes)
y
el
martetorio
un
salón
(nuestros
ancestros
urbanos
recibían
normalmente
todos
los
martes).
Todo
esto
apenas
nos
haría
salir
de
lo
funcional.
Mejor
sería,
de
paso,
imaginar
una
disposición
temática,
un
poco
análoga
a
la
que
existía
en
los
burdeles
[… ]
el
lunetorio
por
ejemplo
sería
la
imitación
de
un
barco;
se
dormiría
en
hamacas,
se
limpiaría
el
suelo
echando
agua
encima
y
se
comería
pescado;
el
martetorio,
por
qué
no,
conmemoraría
una
de
las
grandes
conquistas
del
hombre
sobre
la
naturaleza,
el
descubrimiento
del
Polo
(norte
o
sur,
a
elegir),
o
la
ascensión
del
Everest:
la
pieza
no
tendría
calefacción,
se
dormiría
bajo
espesas
pieles,
la
alimentación
sería
a
base
de
penmican
(corned-‐beef
los
fines
de
mes,
carne
de
los
Grisones
los
días
faustos);
el
miercoletorio
glorificaría
a
los
niños
evidentemente:
desde
hace
algún
tiempo
es
el
día
en
que
no
van
a
la
escuela;
podría
ser
una
especie
de
palacio
de
Dame
Tartine:
las
paredes
serían
de
alajú
y
los
muebles
de
plastilina,
etc.,
etc.”.
Sin
embargo,
el
término
casita
no
es
sólo
esto,
y
es
que,
este
proyecto
de
casita,
muestra
también
la
diferencia
de
significado
entre
la
segunda
residencia
y
la
casa
de
fin
de
semana.
Ambos
conceptos,
muy
bien
contextualizados
en
el
libro
Casa
Collage
de
Xavier
Monteys
y
Pere
Fuertes,
se
distinguen
por
sus
características
intrínsecas
en
torno
a
su
programa,
función,
espacio
y
superficie,
siendo,
las
segundas,
las
que
se
proyectan
atendiendo
a
los
no-‐horarios
de
vacaciones,
al
tiempo
libre
destinado
a
desarrollar
los
hobbies
de
sus
propietarios,
y
en
las
que,
por
tanto,
se
produce
una
brusca
ruptura,
tanto
espacial
como
temporal,
entre
las
viviendas
donde
se
lleva
a
cabo
la
vida
entre
semana
y
entre
las
que
se
habitan
los
fines
de
semana
o
vacaciones.
Esta
simple
razón
es
por
la
que
el
cliente
exige
legítimamente
su
herencia
de
espacios
y
quiere
re-‐vivir
su
casita,
no
hacer
una
nueva
casa
sino
recuperar
su
espacio
de
acción.
Con
este
fin,
el
proyecto
se
ha
realizado
mediante
“arquitectura
de
fondo”:
un
símil
a
lo
que
se
conoce
como
ruido
de
fondo.
Ruido
de
fondo,
al
que
no
se
le
presta
atención
ni
distinción,
simplemente
está,
de
forma
predecible,
ahí
detrás,
sonando
sin
cansancio,
paseándose
inadvertido.
Es
curioso
observar
los
diferentes
sonidos
que
ajetrean
y
estresan
ese
ruido
de
fondo:
la
bocina
de
un
automóvil,
una
perra
ladrando
a
las
palomas
que
le
sobrevuelan,
el
cantar
de
los
pájaros
en
el
alba
del
día,
la
vecina
del
tercero
creyéndose
la
mismísima
Nina
Simone,
un
padre
gritando
gol
con
las
frecuencias
más
bajas
posibles,
y
así
sucesivamente.
Estos
sonidos
dan
ritmo
al
ruido
de
fondo
haciéndose
notar,
alterando
ese
mar
de
tranquilidad
que
acompaña
la
planeidad
del
primero.
Las
personas
que
viven
la
mayoría
de
su
tiempo
en
la
ciudad
y
la
minoría
en
el
campo,
tengan
quizás
las
mismas
sensaciones
que
yo,
y
es
que,
cuando
nos
desplazamos
a
ese
lugar,
el
ruido
de
fondo
parece
des-‐aparecer.
El
ruido
se
convierte
en
el
sonido
agradable
del
cantar
de
los
pájaros,
de
los
ladridos
alegres
de
una
jauría
de
perros,
de
un
burro
que
de
vez
en
cuando
rebuzna,
del
chasquido
de
las
hojas
de
los
árboles
advirtiendo
del
movimiento
del
aire.
Sin
embargo,
con
el
paso
de
los
días,
esos
bellos
sonidos
se
acaban
convirtiendo
en
ruido
de
fondo.
Siempre
me
ha
gustado
catalogar
los
diferentes
ruidos
de
fondo
que
caracterizan
los
lugares
en
los
que
he
estado,
son
parte
de
su
esencia,
de
su
alma.
Por
este
motivo,
he
querido
re-‐des-‐cubrir
esta
vivienda
mediante
su
arquitectura
de
fondo
exprimiendo
las
características
que
su
uso
conlleva;
porque
haber
querido
proyectarla
de
otro
modo
hubiera
sido
un
acto
estridente,
egocéntrico,
fuera
de
con-‐texto.
Arquitectura
de
fondo,
simple
pretexto
de
nomenclatura,
arquitectura
que
no
se
deja
ver;
arquitectura
de
estar,
de
ser,
de
las
acciones
que
fueron
y
ahora
quieren
volver
a
ser.
