Jago House, Isle of Wight

Project Value: £150k

Our client required a small seaside holiday house with spacious communal areas and private external spaces on a compact, two way sloping site on the Isle of Wight.Overlooking, privacy and daylight were all considerations.

The Manser Practice designed the house using a 1200mm horizontal and vertical grid, allowing all internal walls, floor, ceilings and even doors to be constructed almost entirely from uncut birch-faced plywood boards. These give a simple yet warm feeling to the interior, reminiscent of the traditional timber beach huts and holiday homes nearby. This coupled with a timber frame meant that no wet trades were involved, speeding up the construction process.

By using a rigorous and very apparent grid, a sense of space, order and structure was imposed on a very small interior.

Commendation, Wood Awards, 2007
