This project for two unusual houses sits in the Montpelier Conservation area in Bristol.

Partially buried in the hillside, the houses have been developed to take advantage of the sloping site and provide garden spaces on all three levels. Each of these gardens has a different orientation and emphasises the very different character of each floor. Until recently the site was occupied by a derelict workshop building which had incorporated the original stone boundary wall to the georgian house above. In developing these houses the workshop building was largely demolished but the old wall retained to provide enclosure to an small entrance courtyard at the front of the house. The main facade of the new houses sits behind this wall and in line with the facades of the adjacent terraced houses. Whilst the top floor and ground floor are invisible from the street the first floor windows of the main facade provide a presence on the street.
